Making Process:
These mugs are built using the slab method. First, flay is rolled out, left to dry until it is strong enough to hold shape without falling over. Then the clay is cut to the desired size. Next the cylinder is made by joining one end of the piece over the other end, attaching with ‘slip’ – just clay mixed with water. Once this cylinder has dried to leather hard state it is attached to the base of the mug and a handle attached. I then leave the mug to dry slowly over a period of 1-2 weeks so all moisture has been removed at air temperature. The mug then enters the kiln for the first ‘bisque’ firing. I then brush on the combination of glazes and the mug is refired in the kiln. Both firings take approx 48hrs from start to finish, and the whole making process has around 20 distinct stages. Hand building is a slow craft and is not forgiving if rushed.
Product information:
This piece has been fired in an electric kiln to 1250 degrees centigrade. All dimensions and weights where shown are approximate. This piece is glazed inside and out, with the exception of the base which is unglazed. We therefore recommend protecting surfaces you place this item is placed on.
Please note that all of my pieces are handmade and one of a kind, therefore minor imperfections may be present in the form, texture, colour and markings created during the making process – these add to the character of each piece, and makes each piece unique. Bases may not be completely level which reflects the handmade quality and the processes undergone through firing in the kiln.
To preserve the beautiful glaze we advise handwashing items only. Glaze is food safe.
