Kurinuki is a Japanese method of making items by carving out the shape from a solid block of clay. Creating these pieces is a gradual process, carving at the point the clay is just at the right moisture level. Too wet and you might have the piece collapse, too dry and carving is not possible. There is also a fine balance when carving to ensure walls don’t become too thin. Often the outer design can have a dense, raw appearance but the piece benefits from not being over heavy in it’s weight. Therefore carving out the interior space requires patience and a delicate touch to ensure the item is functional as well as visually appealing.

This pot is made with stoneware clay and has been fired in an electric kiln to 1250 degrees centigrade. All dimensions and weights are approximate. This piece is glazed inside and most of the outer surface but not on the base (stoneware is never glazed on the base – it would stick to the kiln shelves if it were!).

Please note that all of my pieces are handmade and one of a kind, therefore minor imperfections may be present in the form, texture, colour and markings created during the making process – these add to the character of each piece, and makes each piece unique. Bases may not be completely level which reflects the handmade quality and the processes undergone through firing in the kiln.  Some of the edges may feel a rough or sharp, this is perfectly normal with this design.

To preserve the beautiful glaze we advise handwashing items only. Glaze is food safe. We recommend protecting delicate surfaces this item is placed on.
